DIY VOLUNTOURISM: Raw Travel is heading to Peru and we've made contact with Sascha, a German ex-pat and his Peruvian wife and family to show us some of the sites in and around Lima. Sascha and his wife have traveled the world pitching in to help people in ways big and small and in speaking to Sascha over skype, we came up with an dea for a give back in Pisco for our visit.
As in most developing countries around the world, school supplies (tuition, books, pencils, paper, bags, etc.) are not paid for by the government but by the families of the kids. Sascha's wife has a friend who works and lives in Pisco and knows of a small grammer school (about 100 students) in a poor area of Pisco where many of the children can't afford the most basic of school supplies.
We're going to illustrate the power of DIY Voluntourism
by raising some funds for some basic school supplies, which we'll film and then use the segment's broadcasts in one of the Peru episodes to raise awareness of DIY Voluntourism, Peru and hopefully more funds for these particular kids in Pisco.
Right now our needs are modest as we're going to purchase pens, pencils, paper and other basic supplies with the money raised.
Later, when the show is broadcast, we'll up the ante. Everyone who donates now will get a "Thank You" credit in the episode. No amount is too small as U.S. dollars go a long way in Peru.
