Being a Sri Lankan, it is normal to maintain my roots with where I came from. A pearl-shaped island is full of treasures, beautiful seas and beaches, tropical forests, and home to some beautiful animals and birds. Rich in culture and traditions. Warm-hearted people who would welcome you around the year.

As usual around the world nowadays, the peace-loving nation was forced into civil war and the 30 years of war have taken an unbearable toll on ordinary human beings for so long in Sri Lanka. After the war ended 14 years ago, many assumed that there would be light at the end of the tunnel to improve the living standards, the facilities and, most importantly, education in the country. As life was slowly moving forward, Covid-19 came to push the progress back even further and recovery looks very hard and farfetched.

This year many of my friends are celebrating the landmark year and what better way is there to celebrate this achievement than to help people who are in need and desperate for aid and guidance? Both our past experiences and concrete evidence suggest that only education can elevate the younger society to lift themselves out of poverty and discrimination and we, as ex-pats, are determined to help those in need in whatever way possible.

To fulfil this desire, I'm raising money in aid of 'OUR SOCIETY UNITED KINGDOM', a UK-registered Charity, and every donation will help. Unlike previous years, my body has aged and my recovery takes twice as much time as it used to. With all this in consideration, this year I am walking a 50km distance at North Down on Saturday the 22nd of July 2023.
