The situation is tender because it's extremely political. The vagueness of this message (and the other) is to ensure that our friend is protected from any backlash around the awareness of the injustice in their country.
For my birthday this year, I'm raising funds for a VERY VERY close personal friend (international). This person has a family member (let's call this person their 'Uncle') who was arrested for attending a protest in the country about 30 years ago and has been in prison since. We're delighted to share that the "Uncle" is being freed from prison this year, however, he's entering back into a world that looks nothing like the one he left in the 1990's. He will have family and love but no material possessions. Coming home from (being wrongfully in) prison, especially after several decades, is tremendously hard – psychologically and emotionally. Even when people don’t leave with physical scars, even when they have family, it is a shock to be thrust into what is a very new world.
This fundraiser is to make the transition to the outside world feel just slightly more humane by providing the tools necessary to survive in the 21st century. It's to help with rent and the familial burden that the extended family will be taking on. He is an artist who has sketched as a mechanism to survive his prison sentence (so we'd like to support this).
This is someone who has fought in the name of justice, peace, and freedom.
We want to raise enough money to offer "him" a little of that: justice, peace, and freedom.
