Hi there, my name is Jeroen.
On the 26th of April I'll be running my first half marathon in Ballarat.
I've had it on my mind for a while to do it for something bigger than just to do this run for the challenge of it.
The cause will be to raise money for men's mental health, especially in regional Australia. Even though it's needed everywhere, in the remote parts access to help is more difficult, and the culture of don't talk, just keep going is stronger.
A few months ago I met Aaron Schultz, the founder of The Outback Mind Foundation, and his story, goal and vision resonates with me to the point that I would like to raise money for this.
Working within the mental health sector myself, I understand the importance of giving people the support and voice they deserve and need.
Why just focus on men's mental health for this?
I care for mental health for everyone, men or women, but I'm a man and it shocks me to see how many men are struggling. I truly believe that everyone can benefit from men who are balanced within and realise that it's not a weakness to open up and face whatever has been buried inside for a long time.
They can become better role models for their families, better partners or husbands, more productive within their lives and a positive example for the younger generations.
This is why I will raise money for this foundation, as I feel that Aaron and his team are working hard to better men around them and us.
They facilitate men's circles around the country to reduce mental health challenges for regional Australian men, and work towards eliminating male suicide and reducing domestic and family violence in our communities.
Aaron and his team are creating their new, 3rd documentary this year with the aim of helping regional people to move towards a pathway of self acceptance.
This film will highlight 1 or 2 regional AFL clubs and track their progress throughout the season as we teach them skills like meditation, vulnerability and emotional intelligence.
I hope that this sparks the interest of people and, that you're willing to donate for this cause, even how small your donation might be, every dollar counts!
Much love,
Jeroen.
