Hi, it’s Tilly, Daisy, and Froggy and we are raising money for Kingwede Primary school ❤️
Since we began teaching in Kenya at Kingwede 2 months ago, we have grown close to many of the children and loved becoming a part of the community. We have been having an amazing time here, but it has also been incredibly challenging and shown us some of the problems the school faces on a daily basis (particularly a lack of basic learning resources such as pens, exercise books, and classroom materials.) Therefore, we have decided to organise a fundraiser in the hope of improving the children’s education in any way possible, helping provide them with the resources they need to succeed at school.
One of the most noticeable issues is the lack of textbooks. In an English lesson 30 children share 3 textbooks preventing them from easily reading questions and extracts making it difficult to teach lessons and even more difficult for them to learn to the best of their ability. Marking their recent exams, we noticed that their comprehension skills are lacking as a result of this. A main aim for us is supplying Kingwede with enough textbooks for a full class, especially for the core subjects.
Similarly, many of our students have no pens or paper to write with, meaning they are often unable to partake in class or do the work we set. As you can imagine, this very quickly leads to children falling behind or not coming to school at all. So providing the classroom with exercise books and pens will at least give the students a chance at learning!
Another issue that we have found is that period poverty is a significant problem for many them. The girls are very uneducated about periods and have no idea what to expect or how to deal with it. Access to sanitary items is very limited as they are unaffordable for most families and a clean place to discard them is completely absent at Kingwede. Therefore, we want to provide our school with sanitary bins and to supply as many girls as possible with some sanitary items. We hope this will help them to feel more able to come into school, even when on their period, which will massively reduce the amount of lessons the girls miss.
We are also aware how many of our friends are on travelling / uni budgets, however donating just £5 could buy a chair for the nursery classroom, a few pens for grade 5 and a textbook for grade 6 - all for the price of a pint!
We really appreciate all your support, thank you, and follow along for more updates!!
From Froggy, Matilda and Daisy ❤️
