As a team, we are working on raising money to support 7 Eritrean international footballers that have been seeking asylum in Uganda since December 2019. They originally came to Uganda for the Cecafa Cup, and defected after seeing it as an opportunity to escape the oppressive regime in Eritrea. Eritrea is often known as the North Korea of Africa, and is also one of the "fastest emptying countries" in the world. Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1991, but has been ruled by an authoritarian regime ever since. The government has never held elections, and often uses violence with anyone it deems a threat. These footballers are just a few of many athletes that have taken advantage of an opportunity like this to flee Eritrea with hopes of enjoying civil liberties elsewhere. They are currently hiding from people who are cooperating with the Eritrean government. They eat one meal per day, and are in fear of being deported to Eritrea, where they will be considered "traitors" and subject to violence by the government. They desperately need our financial help, and this is the least we could do. The money raised will be used to temporarily purchase food/groceries and toiletries, to pay off rent, to pay for their phone bills, etc.
