Bottom Line Up Front
Mother of Medal of Honor recipient, Sgt. Alfredo Cantu Gonzalez, and lifelong citizen of Edinburg, Texas, Dolia Gonzalez is more than your average woman; she is a hero and an icon of love, hard work, and devotion. And now her home is damaged beyond what she could ever hope to afford to repair.

Loyal Devotion to Duty
Dolia's only son, Freddy, is well known in Edinburg, TX. There is Freddy Gonzalez Elementary, Freddy Gonzalez Dr., and the Alfredo Gonzalez Veteran's Home. His legacy is that of sacrifice and gallantry in the face of opposition. Sgt. Gonzalez lost his life while in command of 3rd Platoon during his second tour in Vietnam. Despite receiving fatal wounds from mortar and rockets, Freddy continued to lead his men on the offensive- his only focus was the safety and success of those who followed him.

A Home Worth Fighting For
Before Freddy left for his second tour in Vietnam, he promised his mother he would build her a big house on a hill when he got back. Freddy never came back. In 1969, a year after his passing, Dolia purchased the home she lives in now with funds obtained via Dependency and Indemnity Compensation checks fromthe U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Unfortunately, she stopped receiving compensation checks in 1992 and in 1995, the USDVA demanded repayment for checks they say were issued by mistake. She worked as a waitress at a diner called Echo just to make ends meet. She was forced to quit her job at Echo in 2014 due to health concerns. She currently works part time at the local H.E.B. to cover basic expenses.
More than just a building, Dolia's house is the home that her son wanted her to have. In the 48 years she's lived there, Dolia has been unable to afford the rising cost of repairs and now the roof cannot stand up against Texas storms. Water damage peaks through the ceiling in her living room, and the wood of her roof is worn by weather and time.
