NEXT SEASON: Support The Gate Theater's 2025/2026 Season!

The Gate Theater, Northern Thailand's first English-language theater and Indiana’s first international theater company, having successfully achieved its initial funding goal of $8,500, now sets its sights on an ambitious 20th year with its 2025/2026 season.

Founded in 1997 in Chiang Mai and incorporated in Indiana in 2018 as a 501(c)(3), The Gate Theater bridges international and local communities. A vital artistic hub and the first of its kind in Northern Thailand, The Gate Theater was born from Stephan Turner’s vision. Turner's theatrical roots run deep, beginning with Stage Lighting and Scenic Design studies at Indiana University Northwest in the late 1970s. He went on to found The Gary Creative Workshop Theater, dedicated to giving voice to local actors and playwrights. His commitment continues today, exemplified by impactful productions such as Driving Miss Daisy in Chiang Mai and at Indiana University Northwest in June 2024, which showcase the theater’s ability to foster cross-cultural connection and deliver high-caliber performances.

The Gate Theater is more than just a theater; it's a bridge between cultures, a platform for diverse voices, and a source of artistic excellence.

The 2025/2026 season promises to bring powerful and thought-provoking stories to the stage:

The Premier of Restive Souls: This gripping one-act docudrama, written by Stephan Turner, unearths the brutal truths of human trafficking, exposing the realities of forced labor and exploitation that ensnare countless lives. Restive Souls is more than a performance—it’s a call to confront the shadows of our society and ignite the fight for freedom. The Premier will be staged in Gary, IN.

The Premier of Richard Wright's Native Son: In this Gate Theater adaptation of Wright's novel, the story of 20-year-old Bigger Thomas, a Black youth living in utter poverty on Chicago's South Side in the 1930s, unfolds. Thomas accidentally kills a white woman at a time when racism is at its peak, and he pays the price. This production will be staged in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

James Baldwin's The Amen Corner will also be staged in Gary, Indiana.
“It’s an awful thing to think about, the way love never dies!” With that shattering realization, Sister Margaret Alexander, the central figure in James Baldwin’s The Amen Corner, reaches the crossroads of her life. For years, the charismatic Margaret has led the congregation of her storefront church in Harlem, and has raised her son, a gifted musician, in the path of righteousness. But when her husband, a down-on-his-luck jazz musician, comes home unexpectedly, Margaret is faced with the prospect of losing both her pulpit and her son, and must confront the choice she made long ago—to give up the love of a man and replace it with the love of God.

Additional projects will be announced soon.

To bring these vital stories to life in both Chiang Mai and Gary, we are seeking $8,500 to fund our 20th season. Due to lower operating costs in Thailand, this amount covers our entire season—a sum that wouldn't even fund a single American production. Your generosity will directly fund venue rentals, set design, licensing, and equipment, ensuring the continued impact of The Gate Theater and honoring Stephan Turner's legacy. Your support will ensure that The Gate Theater continues to be a platform for diverse voices, a source of artistic excellence, and a bridge between cultures.

Please join us in keeping the curtain raised. Donate today, share our campaign, and help us ensure that The Gate Theater's 19th season thrives. Your generosity will ensure that the voices of The Gate Theater will continue to resonate for generations to come.
