Raise money in memory of Joe Field

I am running the Achill half marathon in memory of Joe Field. For those who don't know, he is Maxine's cousins son. He was the same age as our Jack. (5 days apart). Joe was born with a rare form of dwarfism. He was very poorly a lot of the time - but you would never know! He always pushed himself, and became a champion swimmer and runner. He was even picked for the England para swimming team!

Due to his rare form of dwarfism he had to have open heart surgery when he was 5 years old. Painful blood plasma infusions - which took 3 hours each week, for years as he had no immune system. He had to have his hips rebuilt and learn to walk again- as they were wearing away. Then to top it all off after being hit on the head with a football he was diagnosed with a cluster of brain tumours! and had a 12 hour surgery to remove them.

Joe worked hard to be included and had to work harder than everyone else. Unfortunately, he was bullied for his disabilities and often turned away from local teams even though he was as good (if not better) then the team. He parents drove for hours each day and up to 6 days a week to get him to a swimming club where he could swim.

Joe and his family used to stay at our house for a week or so for a few summers. He he had a great time at the Achill Rovers summer football camp one year. Very sadly at age 16 Joe sadly decided to take his own life. We are all left devastated. His parents have set up a charity in his name to raise money for awareness of inclusion for people with disabilities. It is so important that everyone is treated fairly.
