The Raey Community School Ethiopia COVID-19 Crisis

Donation protected

Raey school  has been insurmountably challenged  by COVID-19 both directly with children, families and staff suffering illness  and indirectly with inflation, food shortages and homelessness.
There are nearly 560 children and their families we are supporting, who are in a precarious situation, all extremely vulnerable and for whom  catching COVID-19 would  be life threatening.
Forced to close, we ran emergency food and medial supplies as this posed a huge risk  for our vulerable families.
In 2020 -2021  we  distributed purchased and donated necessities to the families of our children but we did not  have the funds to ensure that our children had enough to survive over the  lock down period. The families urgently needed  supplies as they hade no one to support them or means to support themselves during the crisis.
Your support through our GOFUNDME  fundraiser enabled a continual food line. School materials were provided, work and assessments marked and the children had  a vital  life line and communication. The community rallied and under great adversity supported 600 families in isolation for 6 months.
Ethiopia, being one of the poorest nations on Earth, lacks the infrastructure to assist our vulnerable students and their families in normal times, let alone during this pandemic.
Our  first goal was to get through Lock down and  to welcome  all our Raey students, healthy and happy, back to school  praying the pandemic had passed.
Sadly there has been no repite and the impact of Covid is everywhere.  Raey school re opened and  ran for nearly 8 months in bleak and sterile conditions recently closing for what would have been Summer School over the break. Instead our classrooms are empty and our hearts  breaking to not be able to offer this.
We faced necessary and enforced  Infection control /cleaning which was another crippling finacial burden. The children and staff adhered to masks and distancing, never complaining and never, ever thinking of anything than giving this there all.
Our humble staff and cooks, the most  selfless human beings exposed themselves  to risk to ensure the children are cared for.

School is closed for Summer and should reopen in September 2021  with 28 new 3 year olds but  with all funds exhausted, no volunteers,  food shortages and weather extremes it is a frightening and scary period for all of us.

Goal 3 is to secure funds for our  560 children and  their families, pave a way through the pandemic, enabling education, nutrition, health and wellbeing for all.
Immediately upon receipt of donations food supplies will be sourced and utilised, medial care provided with water, sanitation and schooling continued. There is complete transparency every step of the way and we encourage you to follow our journey as you are making the difference.
A donation of $100 enables us to purchase teff flour, oil and other necessities, such as soap and clean water, for one of these families for several months. We work on the premise of a mere 50 cents a day per child and family
Vegetable gardens, spices and simple markets will promote an income stream and training women in leather will bring skill and long term  plans for sustainabiity and other empowerment strategies .
Right now, its a fight for survial.and  any amount, big or small, will literally help keep these families alive - they are the most vulnerable facing the terrible COVID-19 pandemic . The more we raise the more children and families we can save from starvation, sickness and potential death.

We are a registered Australian charity, therefore all donations above $2 are tax deductible.

“Thank you for any contribution you give, it is truly appreciated and will make a huge difference to some of the world’s most disadvantaged children and their families during this life threatening time.”
Dr Carolyn Roesler, co-founder and Australian MD.

About us
Raey is a not for profit children’s charity providing meals, clothing, education and medical aid to the most vulnerable children and their families in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

From humble beginnings in 2007, in a tin shed with a dirt floor and 38 children, many of whom were orphaned, the RAEY School now has its own campus with classrooms, a kitchen and running water, providing schooling, health care and nutritional support to almost 560 children and their families.
