Rachel's Social Clowning Trip to Bali

Donation protected
Hi friends!

My name is Rachel and I have been given an extraordinary opportunity to travel to Bali this April,  to be part of a social clowning project through the Clown Conservatory  based out of the Circus Center  in San Francisco.

We will be partnering with the Bali Children's Project to tour rural communities on the Indonesian island of Bali, offering free-of-charge interactive performances and workshops in circus.  Our goal is to provide education, creativity, laughter, and relief for youth in rural villages of Bali living in poverty.

This program has two main objectives:
1) To provide education, creativity,  laughter, and relief for youth in rural villages of Bali living in poverty with fewer access to resources.  The performance and workshops will be offered completely FREE of charge next April in partnership with The Bali Children's Project .

2) To provide hands-on learning experience for graduates of the Clown Conservatory Professional Program that offers the opportunity to apply their training in social clowning, performance, and circus in less advantaged communities.

Poverty is common and widespread in Bali, particularly in remote communities beyond the reach of tourists. We will focus our efforts primarily on children who come from environments of hardship, far removed from the experience of most tourists in parts of Bali, ranging from Pemuteran in the far north west, Singaraja in the north and communities in Karangasem in the east, with many from around Ubud in southern Bali and Munduk in the high mountains.

How you can help:
Each volunteer for this project needs to fund themselves in order to insure the performances and workshops for children are free. Your donation will contribute to:
- Airfare to Bali and back home
- Lodging while on tour to each community
- Transportation through Bali to various schools and community centers,
- Food/water.

Timeline:
In order to secure my place as a volunteer, performer, and educator, I must pay my non refundable deposit of $500 by Jan 1st, 2019. On February 1st 2019 half of the remaining costs are due, and on March 1st 2019 the remainder of my costs are due.

My path as an educator and circus artist:
As many of you know, I started my career as an educator in New Orleans, teaching high school math. As I fell in love with being in the classroom, building relationships, and being part of a school community, I saw a lack of movement and laughter throughout the school day, for both students and teachers. It was not until I started combining my passion for circus arts with math instruction that I truly began to connect deeply with kids and create an environment for growth.  I had the opportunity to teach circus arts at the International School of Louisiana (ISL) to K-8th graders.  This is where I was first exposed to Social Circus.   Through ISL I was able to work with other nationally recognized social circus organizations at Cirque Du Soleil's Cirque Du Monde social circus training.

This fall I moved to California to continue to teach circus arts in Oakland Public Schools, as well as continue my own professional training at the Circus Center.

What is Social Circus/Social Clowning?

For a long time juggling was just my hobby or cool party trick. However, when I discovered social circus and social clowning my teaching mindset started to change.  My favorite definition of clowning is the release of tension through humor. Therefore, social clown & social circus is any form of service work, whether that be in hospitals, high need schools, etc. , while using circus as your tool. IT'S EXCELLENT!

Clowning and Circus arts challenge youth to use their bodies and minds creatively and playfully. We teach valuable lessons that cultivate teamwork, persistence, mindfulness, and positivity. Children who have experienced emotional trauma need safe spaces for creative expression and emotional release. Social circus sets an intentional environment for creative play, goal setting, building trusting relationships. As clowns, we provide the space needed for this exploration. The clown gives permission to play, to laugh, and to engage fully with the world. This type of whole-hearted engagement inspires self-confident, committed, and passionate young people who will one day be leaders, artist, and change makers in their communities.

So much love in my heart:
Any sort of donation, sharing the link, or just reading this page means the world to me.  I could not truly believe in this work and give it my all without the many people who showed that they believe in me. With your help we will give hundreds of children and families the chance to release tension through humor and grow together.

Yours truly,
Rachel/Garbanzo the Human Bean
