Rachel Davis is a local Cochrane mama of three tiny humans. She’s faith filled, vibrant, loving, compassionate, joyful, fun, silly, and one of the best friends, mamas and wives.

Due to a hereditary genetic mutation called BRCA1 Rachel chose to have a preventative double mastectomy this past January to decrease her 87% risk of breast cancer. Her family, friends and health care team were all shocked when a routine pathology report returned a week later with a diagnosis of Invasive Breast Cancer. Despite her best attempts to be proactive she and her young family found themselves thrown into the very fight she had tried to protect them from. Thankfully an additional surgery confirmed that the cancer had not yet spread and it is believed that the surgeons removed the entirety of the mass.

However, further tests revealed that Rachel’s tumour was extremely aggressive and ranks as one of the most difficult subtypes to treat. Additionally, the recurrence rate is extremely high within 3 years. Should it return it would likely be considered stage 4. After much prayer and counsel Rachel and her Husband have made the difficult decision to pursue an aggressive chemotherapy treatment in an attempt to prevent a recurrence and hopefully allow her many more years of investment in her children’s lives.

Rachel’s fight will be costly to her health and the aggressive nature of this treatment will render her more incapable of physically caring for her children with each passing week. Without family close by and Andrew’s full time work responsibilities the Davis family will be relying heavily on private childcare, ideally a nanny, to provide the most stable and nurturing environment for their children (ages 5, 4 & 2) to navigate this storm.
