Hi, my name is AvaLotus.

My mom is terminally ill, without a cure and facing a tough battle with two rare genetic disorders, including other health issues that are very debilitating.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any doctors who can provide the help she needs. Her immune system is completely compromised. No matter what medication and therapies they throw at her, it's little to no improvement to her health. Some medications are causing more problems. The best they can do is prescribe pain medication to keep her comfortable, but even that doesn’t always work. My parents often find themselves in and out of the hospital, driving to different states for help, attending daily appointments, getting hydration infusions, and managing blood thinners for one of her rare genetic disorders and blood transfusions due to spontaneous hemorrhages. She also undergoes multiple surgeries and iron infusions with debilitating recovery one after another.

My dad has become her full-time caregiver, dedicating his time to support her during her hospital stays. As a family of six, we are in desperate need of financial support. Even though my dad is providing care for my mom, the healthcare system doesn’t compensate him for his time when she is hospitalized. We’re currently falling behind on our mortgage and bills.

Our car isn’t suitable for her needs, as we have to bring along her walker or wheelchair depending on how she feels each day. Our home is in disrepair and needs a lot of work, but we often struggle to get the help we need. The bills keep piling up, and I’m trying to find a job, but with my mom’s frequent hospital visits, it’s tough because I'm the only one available to care for my younger siblings ages 4, 5, and 9, while my parents are away. Making it hard for me to keep a steady job. It's a lot for me, but we are in this together because she would do the same for me or anyone else. How she makes it through so much. I don't know, but her courage inspires me. If you've ever gotten to meet my mom, then you would know how amazing and empathetic she is.

Moreover, my mom has unfortunately faced discrimination because of her tattoos, name, race etc and my dad ensures she gets treated fairly as she can be too soft-spoken to speak up for herself and has social anxiety. I love my mom deeply, and she means the world to our family. She is an incredible person, mother, teacher, role model, friend, shoulder to cry on, and the glue that holds our family together. Our lives have completely changed since her diagnosis. Holidays and birthdays aren't the same, but she does the best that she can. We don't want to lose our home. This has been the only stable home she has ever had in her life. She envisions watching her grandkids and growing old here. She often feels uncomfortable asking for help because she doesn’t want to burden others.
