Help Preserve Piedmont Football History – Support Jason’s Eagle Scout Project
Hi, my name is Jason Shum, and I’m a Scout in Troop 15 and a proud member of the Piedmont High School football team. For my Eagle Scout project, I’m creating a digital archive for my beneficiary, the Piedmont Gridiron Club, which will be hosted on their website. The goal is to preserve and celebrate the rich history of our football program and make it accessible to the entire Piedmont community.
Piedmont football has experienced triumphs, challenges, and unforgettable moments. In 2022, the varsity season was canceled due to a shortage of players, following two years of COVID disruptions. There was real concern that the program might be shut down for good. But under the leadership of Coach Jordan Seiden, the team rallied returning in 2023 to win the WACC championship and reignite school pride and spirit.
That turnaround wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of a core group of parents including Keri Elmquist, Roderick Alemania, Teddy King and Steve Long and coaches like Coach “P” (Pouyan Assadi), who played a crucial role in rebuilding the team from the ground up, and Billy Goldstein (aka Coach Billy Bob), whose leadership in Piedmont’s flag football program helped inspire and prepare younger players for the
high school level. Their contributions are a vital part of the story we’re working to preserve.
Our history also includes legends like Drew Olson, who played quarterback at UCLA and went on to the NFL. It includes football innovation at the highest level—thanks to Coach Kurt Bryan and Coach Steve Humphries, whose A-11 Offense gained national recognition for its creativity and impact on the game.
And of course, we honor historic seasons like 1976, when the team went undefeated, setting a standard of excellence that still inspires players today.
The legacy of Piedmont football also includes real-life heroism beyond the field. Jean C. Witter, Jr., captain and quarterback of the 1938 team, went on to serve with distinction in World War II, where he made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. Today, our team plays on Witter Field, named in his honor which is a powerful reminder of the courage, leadership, and selflessness that define our program’s deepest values.
Through this project, we aim to include:
- Team rosters, schedules, and player profiles from every season
- Scanned and restored photos from yearbooks and archives
- Interviews with coaches and players, past and present
- Links to Piedmont Post articles covering each game
- Recognition of the launch of the girls’ flag football team, a groundbreaking moment for the program
To make this possible, I need your help. The primary expense is a high-quality book scanner to digitize yearbooks, photos, and historical documents. I’m raising $450 through this GoFundMe campaign to purchase the scanner and cover related costs. After completing the project, I plan to donate the scanner to the Piedmont High School library so it can continue to be used by students and staff for future archiving and research.
Thank you so much for your support!
