Homeless help
Since being in a car accident on July 12 a homeless man by the name of Nathan Hood, had been parked in a lot in a nearby gym. Yesterday Mario stopped to get his story and offer him help .
WHERE IT STARTED
Nathan ran out of gas on the freeway on July 12, when his car was hit by another vehicle traveling about 70mph. His car was pulverized yet because he lives out of it, it was towed to a nearby parking lot where he sat with it for 9 days in hopes an adjuster would come out.
An insurance claim was made by the responsible party however Nathan had no working phone and there was no way to get in touch with him.
HOW ITS GOING
Mario has been in touch with the adjuster who now has Nathan’s information. He gave him water, food and money, reactivated his phone, and brought him to the laundry mat so he could wash his clothes. I reached out to the community, church and researched to get an understanding of what services are available.
Mario received a call from Nathan this afternoon. His car/home was towed this morning and is impounded. My husband left a message for the insurance adjuster and I scrambled to find temporary shelter for him nearby. Because it was so late in the day we had no luck and my husband put him up at a motel 6 for the weekend.
We have poured time and money into this man’s well-being, but it feels like it is in vain at the moment. We will have to pickup on Monday, bringing him to get interviewed/evaluated in van nuys for possible longer-term placement.
I am taking the advice of some by creating this go-fund-me page. If nothing else, to release his car from impound and get back to square 1. Hopefully the calls and services will come together early next week.
Our hearts hurt and Mario feels defeated. This is a far larger task than we expected. Just one story in a sea of 150,000+ in California state alone.
Nathan is clean and sober, kind, well-spoken and very possibly, lives as a high-functioning autistic adult.
I think we can help. I think some of us want nothing more than to know we have made a difference. Donate if you can, money, advice, resource information…it’s all helpful.
