A Father’s Fight: Help Mike Rebuild His Life

Mike Lalor was a perfectly healthy 49-year-old father to Katia (now 17) and Michael (now 15), friend, brother, son and so much more. Mike has always been the kind of man who likes to use his hands—whether it was working at his job as HVAC professional, playing music, fixing things around the house, riding his bike or motorcycle with friends and family from his hometown of Westfield, NJ. He takes pride in being active, independent, and working hard.

In October 2023, Mike suddenly lost control of his legs and collapsed on his front lawn in Bridgewater, NJ. He was rushed to the hospital to have a series of tests to determine what the cause was.

Over 1 year time period, Mike had been through numerous doctor’s and test results, he was diagnosed with Transverse myelitis which is a rare neurological disorder characterized by inflammation of the spinal cord. It can cause a range of symptoms, including pain, muscle weakness, and sensory disturbances, often developing rapidly and the exact cause is often unknown.

Having had multiple doctor’s work with him to recover, over this time he recently was diagnosed with Neurosarcoidosis which is a form of sarcoidosis. It is a long-term (chronic) disease of the central nervous system, which encompasses the brain, spinal cord and optic nerve.

Due to this disease he has lost the ability to be as mobile as he used to be and now requires a walker and/or wheel chair, requires long term medication and disability.

His strength and resilience in the face of impossible odds are nothing short of a miracle, but he did not come out unscathed.

With the loss of the use of his legs, Mike and his kids now face an unimaginable reality. While out of work, his home will need extensive renovations to make it wheelchair accessible, including ramps, widened doorways, and a fully adaptive bathroom and laundry area. They will need a wheelchair-accessible vehicle to help Mike regain mobility and give him the ability to have some of the independence he once had.

While Mike focuses on healing and learning to navigate his new life, these funds will help ease that burden, ensuring that Michael and Katia have the support they need during this difficult time. Every contribution will go directly toward helping Mike rebuild his life, regain his independence, and continue being the incredible father, son, brother, and friend that he has always been.
