Queer Path to Parenthood: Support our IVF Journey
Donation protected
Hello everyone,
For us, the path to parenthood as a same-sex couple requires navigating a complex web of fertility treatments, provincial regulations, and decisions, often with what feels like little guidance. For the past year, we've immersed ourselves in the world of fertility clinics, tests, and treatments in hopes of conceiving. While we've experienced some successes with IUI, we've also suffered the heartbreak of miscarriages.
After researching and consulting with our doctor, we've determined that at this point in our journey, IVF is our next best step. IVF will give us more information about embryo health and a higher chance of success (30-65% success) versus IUI (10-20% success). However, the cost of IVF is a significant financial burden for us. Despite this challenge, we remain hopeful and committed to becoming parents.
As a queer couple, we're no strangers to challenges when navigating our social, political, and medical systems. We know these struggles are not unique to us, given that the lack of access to affordable fertility treatments is a reality many endure, especially since government support is limited. We've invested $15,000 into this journey so far and will continue to invest in our family, but the truth is that the additional cost of IVF is significant. Your support would not only alleviate some of the stress and financial strain but also provide a much-needed sense of community in a system that often fails to show up for people who depend on such treatments to start a family.
Sharing our fertility journey isn't always easy, especially in a society favoring happy endings and success stories. But we believe that staying quiet robs us all of an opportunity to learn, support, and connect. Our openness helps further break down stigmas and creates a safe space for others. Our journey is a testament to the resilience of the queer community and anyone undergoing fertility care. We hope that by speaking up, we can help others feel validated in their own experiences.
We've started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for our IVF treatment, with the goal of $20,000 for a single round. This fee covers sperm & laboratory handling, ultrasounds & bloodwork, medication (pre & post procedure), embryo testing, clinic administration fees, and the procedure itself. This amount does not include storage, shipping, travel, time off work, or any further treatment if we aren't successful on our first IVF attempt. If we fundraise more money than we need, we'll donate any excess funds to another 2SLGBTQ+ person seeking to grow their family.
We're incredibly grateful for every person who chooses to support us on this journey, whether through donation or sharing our story with others. Your contribution to our dream of starting a family is deeply appreciated. We hope to raise a family prioritizing connection, community and love above all else, and we're excited to share that with those around us.
