GOAL:
We are initially seeking to fundraise $2,000 to provide micro grants of $200 to (10) NYC nightlife workers which we intend to distribute by January 1, 2022.
CAUSE:
The current wave of COVID-19 infections (caused by the Omicron variant) has extinguished the vibrant nightlife of New York City for an unspecified amount of time. While venues, bars and restaurants acted quickly to curb the spread by reducing hours and canceling events, nightlife workers have been pushed into precarious financial situations.
NYC’s mayor, Bill de Blasio, has stated that future shutdowns are off the table and is asking those who feel unwell to simply stay home. The city's desire to return to business-as-usual brushes many serious realities under the rug. Working in nightlife makes remote work impossible and it is far more likely to become exposed to COVID and become sick, even for those that are boosted. The limited availability of tests and slow turnaround time for test results guarantees that nightlife workers who catch the virus will lose a sizeable amount of income. The Queer Nightlife Fund looks to address this disparity.
NYC Nightlife is a haven for many, especially those that identify as queer. It is in these spaces that individuals can find and express their full selves, feel empowered, find community and family. Donations to this fund will support those in a variety of roles, including, but not limited to...
- Artists
- Restaurant & Bar staff
- Performers (DJs, Dancers, etc.)
- Production Crews
- Security/Door/Safer Space Monitors
COVID-19 will continue to jeopardize the livelihood of these individuals which is why The Queer Nightlife Fund is committed to supporting individuals into January 2022 and beyond. With your help, we can alleviate some of the financial burden carried by nightlife workers in the NYC scene.
Our waitlist currently has double the number of applicants than our initial goal. Please donate today and share the donation link with your networks so we can support even more individuals negatively impacted by this crisis.
