Queens of Matriarchy: A Black Mother's Day Distro

Donation protected
Black mothers at the Kensington Family Shelter in Brooklyn, NY, supported by Young Black Queens NYC Chapter and Hood School NYC, are facing unique challenges this Mother’s Day. Many are disproportionately impacted by housing insecurity and shelter systems, often due to overlapping structural issues like wage gaps, housing discrimination, and limited access to generational wealth. Mother’s Day can be especially difficult, as it’s not just about lacking resources—it’s about feeling unseen in spaces that aren’t always designed with them in mind.

The funds raised will be used to purchase culturally relevant care items—such as haircare products for natural hair, skincare suited for melanin-rich skin, and other essentials that reflect the lived experiences of Black mothers. These items are often missing in standard donations. Providing them helps restore dignity and identity, offering something personal and grounding in an environment that is often temporary or shared.

Mother’s Day is coming up, and while many of us are celebrating, there are Black mothers in shelters who are navigating this day under very different circumstances. This event is about showing up for them in a real way—providing essentials and thoughtful items that remind them they are seen and valued. I’m asking for your support to help make this happen. Whether it’s donating, sharing, or contributing items, every bit helps us create a moment where these mothers feel appreciated. If you’re able to support, I’d truly appreciate it.
