https://www.facebook.com/blackbirdfarmmiddleboro/ My husband and I purchased a farm a little over a year ago in Middleboro, MA, with the intention of possibly hosting/fostering “a few” rescue animals. What we didn’t foresee then was that the need for a sanctuary farm in our area was far greater than we ever could have anticipated; and that our motto of “there’s always room for one more” would end up putting us in an unsustainable financial situation. We have now provided permanent and foster care/housing for 28 animals large and small, and currently care for and house 14 rescues including two that are now on very expensive palliative/hospice care. All require spring shots/exams, hoof trims, hay, grain, bedding, supplements and several require prescription medications.
After depleting my life savings in an effort to “never say no to an animal in need”, we have come to the point where if we cannot raise some substantial financial assistance, we will have no choice but to shut down our completely self-funded operation and attempt to place the animals elsewhere - which may prove fruitless due to their individual needs and expenses.
To counter that reality, we are in the process of establishing a volunteer board of directors and applying for nonprofit 501(c)(3) status - but even that comes with a financial cost too significant for us to cover on our own.
If we are successful in raising emergency funds now and becoming a licensed non-profit sanctuary, not only can we provide the proper care for the animals we currently have, but we could expand our farm to house more rescues and potentially open ourselves to the public to come and experience our menagerie of misfits for visiting/informational farm days/goat yoga/cow and pig “cuddling/pony rides, etc...but we also, as disabled US Army veterans ourselves, would LOVE to offer equine therapy and just be a place where our military brothers/sisters can come for respite and camaraderie whenever needed.
I realize this is a very big ask (which is precisely the reason I have not asked for anything until now), but we really need your help. Every penny counts, and we will be completely transparent and accountable for every cent donated/spent associated with this effort.
Thank you in advance to anyone willing to contribute or share our desperate plea for help, and I extend an open invitation to anyone that would like to see and experience our farm.
With much love and gratitude,
Sara, Chris, (our children) Max & Lily, and all the animal residents at Blackbird Farm ❤️
