“We don’t know the next time our dogs will eat.”
Those are the words, from the homeless owner of 2 smiling and yappy pit bulls, that sprang us into action.
With shelters either full or closed, many in the Savannah area have been left with nothing. The usual places to find shelter and a bathroom—libraries, gyms, fast food restaurants—are closed. People have been laid off,
storefronts are empty, and there are no longer the usual crowds of people to ask for help. The homeless community in Savannah has been left without a lifeline, and they, along with their companion animals, are hungry and in need of help. As business owners on Broughton Street, we knew we could and HAD to do something to help our community.
Together, Pounce Cat Cafe and Spudnik Potato Bowls have partnered up to provide meals and pet supplies for those most in need throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. After a few brainstorming sessions, our plan was to give away free bagged lunches (a sandwich, a snack, fruit, and a drink) for anyone hungry and give out cans of cat and dog food for those with pets. And...we did.
On Thursday 4/23, we opened our doors to a short line of people, and despite the monsoon rain, we gave out 22 lunches and 20 cans of dog and cat food in an hour. When we told people that we’ll be open tomorrow too, the relief on their face was palpable. Some asked if they could grab a second lunch or a second can of pet food, to which we emphatically said, YES. As word spreads, we expect to see these numbers increase every day.
So far our efforts have been completely self-funded, but we need your help to keep our project going throughout the COVID-19 crisis. For every $5 donated, we will be able to provide 2 bagged lunches and 2 cans of pet food for those in need. In addition to raising funds here, we are also taking donations (pet food, bread, snacks, fruit, canned goods, etc.) at 416 W. Broughton Street from 2pm to 4pm daily.
We know that everyone is going through a tough time, but if you are in a place to help us continue our efforts, we would be forever grateful. If you can’t contribute financially, sharing this campaign with friends and family would truly mean just as much to us.
Thank you so much for supporting us and helping us help our community.
