Desiree & Joel's Journey to Baby

Donation protected
My sister, Desiree, and her husband, Joel, were married three years when they welcomed their first son, Liam Timothy. Desiree's pregnancy was completely normal and Liam is a crazy, fun, energetic little man. A few months after Liam's first birthday, Desiree and Joel decided to try again. When they found out they were pregnant with another little boy, our family was so excited!
However, when Desiree was around 24 weeks, she was hospitalized after not feeling the baby moving for a few days. She was transferred to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis where it was confirmed that the baby had Hydrops fetalis (severe swelling all over his entire body, caused by his red blood cells being broken down). Upon arrival to the hospital, Desiree and Joel were told he probably wouldn't make it through the night. At this point, the doctors decided to try anything they could to save the baby's life. The next morning, Desiree had an intrauterine blood transfusion (a blood transfusion given to the baby through his umblical cord). Desiree and the baby went through six of these extremely risky procedures.
At 28 weeks, the baby was not getting a lot better, but not getting any worse, and his fluid was down some, and Desiree was starting to feel movement from him. But a routine ultrasound showed his oxygen levels were low, so an emergency C-section was performed.
Jonah Donovan Naylor was born on June 27, 2014. They were able to get a breathing tube down his throat and remove fluid from his belly.
After 1 week in the NICU, Jonah Donovan passed away on July 4th from a perforation in his bowels. Desiree and Joel were able to hold Jonah and be with him in his final moments.
After Jonah passed away, it was found that Desiree's antibodies in her blood had changed and they had attacked Jonah's red blood cells causing the Hydrops. After further testing, they were told although the severity could not be known, their child would 100% have the blood type that Desiree's own blood type would fight against.
It was at this point they started to consider surrogacy.
Surrogacy includes a lot of medical and legal fees. Desiree and Joel are still dealing with bills from Jonah's hospital stay and funeral, and I would love to help them financially in any way possible. If you too would like to help them out, please consider donating or praying for our family.

Thank you, Donea Carlton (Desiree's sister)
