Robin's Road To Recovery

Hi, I’m Stephanie DeKane, and I’m reaching out for help during the hardest time in my life. My mom, Robin, has been fighting for her life in the ICU for 25 days. My sister and I have been by her side, grappling with the reality that we need your support to help her through this.

Mom was a vibrant, active woman until a few months ago when her health began to decline. In February, she started struggling, missing family events like Christmas and our birthdays, and losing her independence. She was misdiagnosed at St. John’s Hospital and sent home, only to be rushed back weeks later by ambulance when my brother-in-law found her in critical condition. Doctors discovered my mom had multi- organ failure, sepsis, pneumonia, a ruptured colon, and fluid affecting her brain. It was devastating to watch her deteriorate so quickly.

Mom’s condition was so severe that doctors gave her a 99.9% chance of not surviving. My sister and I had to prepare for the worst while I took on Durable Power of Attorney to make tough medical decisions. I chose to allow an exploratory surgery, which revealed the extent of her illness. Her body was too weak to close the surgical wound for eight days, adding to the emotional and physical toll on our family.

Against all odds, Mom is a miracle. She’s now out of the ICU, but her recovery is far from over. She’s been moved to an inpatient care center to relearn how to walk, talk, and function. This will take at least four weeks, followed by 4-6 weeks of in-home therapy. After losing our dad eight years ago, Mom worked so hard to rebuild her life as a stay-at-home mom turned independent woman. Now, her world has crumbled again, and she faces months of rehabilitation to regain her strength and independence.

My sister and I are doing everything we can to support her, but the medical bills, care costs, and her financial recovery are overwhelming.
