Push'n Roll 2022: Helping on the Accessible Camino

Hi, I am Melanie, a psychologist and pilgrim from Freiburg/ Germany. In June 2022 I'll be joining the Accessible Camino: In our group will be some people with physical handicaps who use wheelchairs as well as 5-6 helpers to push and pull them along the last  about 100 km of the Camino de Santiago. I signed up as a pusher because I'd love to help making dreams come true (to get an impression, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLqFcx1wIoQ).

For me, the Camino is about freedom and connecting with oneself, nature and others. Pilgrims are often open-minded and accepting and can learn a lot from eachother. The Camino instigates a process that can change your life and that of the people around you signficantly. The unique energy of the Camino was also felt by Justin Skeesuck and Patrick Gray, the founders of the Accessible Camino trips, after their initial adventure on the Camino Francés (www.illpushyou.com). Their story and friendship touched me deeply and I want to help them providing this experience to others.

The trip isn't cheap because Justin and Patrick are organizing this on their own and they put a lot of time and energy into this! The group stays together the whole time, sleeping and eating at hotels with accessible rooms and being transported to and from the Camino each day (as these hotels are not on the Camino itself). I am currently saving money to finance my studies to become a psychotherapist. But I've felt drawn to be a part of the Accessible Camino from the first time I heard about it and signed up anyway. I am investing a lot of time and energy  by training almost every day to become fit and strong enought to push. Hi, ich bin Melanie, Psychologin und Pilgerin aus Freiburg. Im Juni 2022 nehme ich teil am "Accessible Camino" (barrierefrei): In unserer Gruppe wird es einige Personen mit körperlichen Einschränkungen geben, die einen Rollstuhl nutzen, sowie pro Rollstuhlfahrer*in  5-6 Freiwillige, die sie die letzten ca. 100 km des Jakobswegs entlangziehen und -schieben. Ich habe mich als Schieberin angemeldet, weil ich dabei helfen möchte, Träume wahr werden zu lassen. Um einen Eindruck zu bekommen, s. hier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLqFcx1wIoQ

Für mich bedeutet der Camino Freiheit und Sich-Verbinden mit sich selbst, der Natur und anderen. Pilger sind oft aufgeschlossen und annehmend und können viel voneinander lernen. Der Camino setzt einen Prozess in Gang, der dein Leben und das deines Umfeldes beträchtlich verändern kann. Die besondere Energie des Jakobswegs haben auch Justin Skeesuck und Patrick Gray erlebt, nach ihrem ursprünglichen gemeinsamen Abenteuer auf dem Camino Francés (www.illpushyou.com). Ihre Geschichte und Freundschaft haben mich tief berührt und ich möchte ihnen helfen, anderen auch diese Erfahrung zu ermöglichen.

Die Reise ist nicht billig, da die Gruppe die ganze Zeit zusammen bleibt, in den gleichen Hotels mit barrierefreien Zimmern übernachtet und isst und täglich vom Camino und zurück transportiert wird (da diese Hotels sich nicht direkt auf dem Weg befinden). Ich spare gerade für meine Psychotherapieausbildung. Aber ich habe mich zum Barrierefreien Camino hingezogen gefühlt, seit ich das erste Mal davon gehört habe und mich trotzdem angemeldet. Ich investiere selbst viel Zeit und Energie in das Vorhaben, indem ich fast jeden Tag trainiere, um stark und fit genug zum Schieben zu sein.
