In Jinja and across Uganda, LGBTQ+ individuals face growing insecurity--ranging from arrests, violent attacks, forced evictions, and media outings. This has worsened under the Anti-Homosexuality Act, which legalizes discrimination and fuels public hostility. Many queer people are now homeless, hiding, or struggling with trauma and mental health crises.
Lived Realities Uganda secured a lease on a house in the Jinja region to serve as a safe center for the LGBT community, House of Grace, providing emergency housing, distribution of HIV medication, and counseling services.
This week, only a month after moving in, House of Grace received a letter from their landlord stating that the bank was repossessing the house from him. In order to save their work, Lived Realities Uganda has negotiated a deal with the bank: If they can raise a down payment of $1,000 by next Thursday, July 10th, they can take possession of the house. If they can pay off the total sale price of $12,000 over the next 6 months, they will own the house outright.
We are looking to raise $1,000 in the next week in order to make a down payment on the house and preserve this source of security and safety for the LGBT community in Jinja.
7/9/25 UPDATE: Grace and their team have been informed of an additional $400 they need to pay in closing costs, so the total that needs to be raised is $1,400. We have now paid the closing costs with the contributed funds (thank you!), but that means we now need to raise $874 BY TOMORROW in order to make the deposit. Please share - most donations have been the result of personal shares!
