This is a bottom-up, people powered, grassroots mutual aid network that supports the community of trans people in Quito, Ecuador to confront the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

How has COVID-19 affected the trans Community in Ecuador?
Ecuador is one of the countries most affected by COVID-19 in Latin America, and Quito is currently one of the cities with the highest number of positive cases in the country. Moreover, this health crisis has had a disproportionate effect on historically marginalized communities. Trans people and, specifically, trans sex workers are experiencing job precarity, further infringement of their rights, additional barriers to access healthcare, lack of income and food shortage, which puts them at higher risk due to discrimination, gender violence and the neglect of state.
For many trans people, whose only option of survival is sex work, they not only face scarcity but they are at risk of police brutality and prosecution if they break the stay at home orders. Many of them don’t even have sufficient funds to pay rent, access food, or basic services, let alone access their hormone treatments and other medications. The lack of food, personal hygienic supplies, face masks, and healthcare affects the whole trans community, but particularly those whose health is already compromised because they are elderly or are living with HIV. Considering the many challenges that this community faces, the resilience, self care, and solidarity exhibited by trans sex workers has been admirable and inspiring.
Our transfeminist and intercultural principles of horizontal collaboration and “solidarity not charity” has enabled Puente Solidarity to reach a larger population of trans sex workers who, due to their gender diversity, have been excluded from the State´s programs of humanitarian assistance and have been left in a situation of abandonment. Since March 2020, we have been able to deliver one and a half tons of food to over 160 people.
Nevertheless, the cases of men, women and trans sex workers who have contracted COVID-19 continue to rise. The community of 200 trans sex workers in Quito have already mourned the loss of at least 5 trans women who have died from the virus. Some of the trans women who have passed away were elders, activists, and community leaders that endured many violations of their human rights and were key figures in the fight for the depenalization of homosexuality in Ecuador that finally occured in 1998. Sadly, they died without receiving any recognition and reparation from the Ecuadorian State.

Puente Solidario en tiempos de COVID-19
La pandemia de COVID-19 ha golpeado muy duro al Ecuador y afectado especialmente a poblaciones en desventaja histórica cómo son las personas que ejercen trabajo sexual, las personas transfemeninas, transmasculinas y no binarias, que se encuentran en una situación de crisis, precariedad laboral y vulneración de sus derechos por la actual emergencia sanitaria.
La situación de precariedad laboral de las trabajadoras sexuales trans se ha agudizado al no poder ejercer su trabajo. Por lo que muchas de ellas no tienen los recursos suficientes para acceder a alimentos ni servicios de salud básicos, muchos menos a sus tratamientos de hormonización. La falta de alimentos, artículos de aseo personal, mascarillas y acceso a la salud pública afecta a toda la comunidad, pero particularmente a aquellas personas cuya salud está comprometida porque son de la tercera edad y/o VIH positivo.
Los casos de personas trans, mujeres y hombres que ejercen trabajo sexual, contagiados de COVID_19 siguen en ascenso. En la comunidad de trabajadoras sexuales trans de Quito, que está conformada por alrededor de 200 personas, hasta la fecha han reportado que al menos 5 mujeres trans han fallecido por COVID-19. Además, algunas de las mujeres trans que han muerto eran lideresas históricas y personas de la tercera edad que durante su vida sufrieron de múltiples violaciones a sus derechos y lucharon por la despenalización de la homosexualidad en el Ecuador, la que finalmente ocurrió en 1998. A pesar de todo y considerando las muchas desventajas que esta comunidad enfrenta, la resiliencia, autocuidado y solidaridad de las trabajadoras sexuales trans y personas trans ha sido admirable. Esta base comunitaria fuerte ha permitido que Puente Solidario sea una iniciativa generada desde la comunidad y que responda a sus necesidades.
Es así que, además de construir una red de apoyo mútuo, Puente Solidario espera rendir un homenaje en memoria de quienes han contribuido a la lucha histórica por los derechos de las diversidades sexo-genéricas y que ahora tristemente están perdiendo sus vida luchando no sólo contra el COVID-19, sino contra las desigualdades históricas, el abandono, la discriminación y la violencia de género.

Since its founding in 2002, Patrulla Legal has charted all of the zones in Quito where informal sex work takes place. Through our constant efforts, we have succeeded in strengthening a strong community-based network and offered free legal help to trans sexworkers who requested it. Since our founding, not only did Patrulla Legal chart out sex work in Quito, we also have contributed to the reduction of police violence and arbitrary detentions, advocated for the rights to public space, identity, aesthetic freedom and the access to healthcare.
Immediately after the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Patrulla Legal worked to transform into Puente Solidario to respond in emergency assistance to the most vulnerable trans sex workers. In this unprecedented global health crisis, trans sex workers and the larger trans community in Quito are facing a situation of further exclusion, criminalization and discrimination. We have recharted the streets of Quito this time to distribute food and supply kits, strengthen a sense of solidarity, engage the community to identify their needs and offer emotional support to those who ask for it.
We have been able to do this thanks to our channels of self-management and donations from our feminist friends in Ecuador and the world. Unfortunately, we are getting less donations every time which has made this essential work challenging. Yet, we are not at all willing to give up and so we invite you to join us and become a part of Puente Solidario.

Desde el 2002, Patrulla Legal ha recorrido todas las zonas de Quito donde se realiza trabajo sexual informal. A través de nuestro trabajo constante hemos logrado fortalecer el tejido comunitario y brindar asesoría legal gratuita a las trabajadoras sexuales trans que lo requieran. En todos estos años, Patrulla Legal no sólo ha recorrido miles de kilómetros, sino que también ha contribuido a la reducción de violencia policial y detenciones arbitrarias reivindicando los derechos al espacio público, la identidad, la libertad estética y acceso a la salud de esta población. Ahora con la crisis sanitaria, las trabajadoras sexuales trans y de la comunidad trans en Quito están enfrentando un situación de criminalización, vulneración y exclusión.
Inmediatamente después de que iniciara la pandemia de COVID-19, Patrulla Legal se extendió transformándose en Puente Solidario para dar una respuesta de ayuda de emergencia a las trabajadoras sexuales trans más vulnerables. Por su diversidad de género, las trabajadoras sexuales trans y personas trans han sido excluidos de los programas de asistencia humanitaria del gobierno y quedado en un estado de mayor desprotección y abandono.
Desde marzo de 2020, hemos recorrido nuevamente las calles de Quito esta vez para entregar kits de alimentos y kits de aseo, fortalecer el sentido de comunidad, involucrar a la comunidad en una red de solidaridad mutua y brindar apoyo emocional a quienes lo pidan. Hasta ahora hemos podido entregar más de 1 tonelada y media de comida a más de 160 personas. Esto lo hemos logrado gracias a nuestros canales de autogestión y las donaciones de nuestras amig@s feministas en Ecuador y el mundo. Lamentablemente, cada vez son menos los recursos que nos llegan y el trabajo se ha vuelto más difícil. Pero nosotr@s no estamos dispuest@s a rendirnos y por eso te invitamos a que sean parte de nuestro Puente Solidario.
