My cousin Carmen has sorrow in her heart because her siblings Ada and Antonia live in a deteriorated house.

My name is Keyla, and I am from Honduras. My cousins who live in Honduras are in dire need of monetary assistance. They need help building a safe home.

Their current house has a damaged roof, and the frame is cracked. The kitchen area has no roof. The bedroom has some roof, but it leaks. When it rains, they set out buckets to catch the water and stand in the corner of the room until the storm passes. At nights when they sleep, they must cover themselves with plastic tarps for protection against the elements. Now that it is hurricane season, my family fears that the house will collapse during a storm. 


The Siblings
My cousins’ names are Carmen, Reina, Ada, and Antonia. Carmen is the oldest of the four siblings. Their father died when Carmen was three, and their mother was seven months pregnant with her youngest sister, Antonia. My cousins' lives have been full of uncertainty and abuse since their father’s death. The details of their struggles are gruesome and painful, which include home displacement, domestic violence, and mental illness. The most recent struggle they faced was a brutal machete attack on Antonia. The man who committed this brutal attack has fled the area and will not be brought to justice; that is a common injustice in third world countries.

Ada's Story
At the age of fifteen, Ada started showing signs of schizophrenia. Due to lack of education on mental illness, it was determined that she was “cursed.” Instead of receiving medical treatment, she was taken to visit the “local medicine man.” Finally, at the age of sixteen, Ada was taken to a clinic; she was medically diagnosed with schizophrenia. The doctors provided the proper medical treatment Ada needed.

Now Ada is thirty-two and can manage her mental illness with medication. Every month Ada needs to refill her medication. Even though Carmen tries her best to get the medication, she does not always have the money. Five years ago, during a psychotic episode, Ada was taken advantage of and impregnated. She doesn't know who fathered her child and now bears the challenge of providing food and shelter for her son. 


Carmen is Asking for Help
Carmen has cared for her siblings her whole life. At the age of twelve, Carmen moved from the hilltop to a nearby city to work. She worked so her siblings could have food. Later, Reina and Antonia joined her. Ada has stayed on the hilltop with her mother for the past twenty years. In May 2019, after being attacked Antonia moved back with her mother and Ada.

Over the last twenty years, storms have damaged the house where Ada and her elderly mother live. After each storm, they fix what they can, but their resources are extremely limited. To add to the instability of their living situation, the house they live in belongs to someone else. They face the possibility of being homeless when the owner can no longer help them. Carmen is heartbroken to see her siblings situation and has implored her family to unite and help her build her siblings a house. 


Working Together to Build a Home
To help Carmen and her siblings, someone has donated a piece of land. Now, the challenge for Carmen is to raise enough money to build the house. Carmen is hoping to build a house that will provide just the essentials of a solid wall frame and a roof.

Our family has contributed money to cover the legal fees to transfer the land into the four siblings names. They started a local fundraiser through the sale of food. They also have sold tickets for a chance to win several donated items. These fundraisers have helped raised a small amount of money, but it will take months to raise the money to build the house with just fundraisers. If money is not raised quickly, my cousins will have to stay in their house through the peak of hurricane season (mid-August- late October). The situation is time-sensitive, and that is why, as a family, we decided to set up a GoFundMe account. Please Help us by donating funds and by sharing this story. 

The funds raised will mainly benefit Ada and Antonia with a small portion of the money being used to cover transaction fees to get the money to Honduras. The goal is to build a home that the family can share and have to take refuge.

Ada y Carmen

Mi prima Carmen tiene un gran dolor en su corazón porque sus hermanas Ada y Antonia viven en una casa deteriorada.

Mi nombre es Keyla, y soy de Honduras. Mis primas que viven en Honduras necesitan ayuda monetaria. Necesitan ayuda para construir un hogar seguro.

La Historia de Ada
A la edad de quince años, Ada comenzó a mostrar signos de esquizofrenia. Debido a la falta de educación sobre enfermedades mentales, se determinó que estaba "maldecida". En lugar de recibir tratamiento médico, fue llevada a visitar al "hombre de medicina local". Finalmente, a la edad de dieciséis años, Ada fue llevada a una clínica; fue diagnosticada con esquizofrenia. En la clínica los médicos proporcionaron el tratamiento médico adecuado que Ada necesitaba.

Ahora Ada tiene treinta y dos años y puede controlar su enfermedad mental con medicamentos. Cada mes Ada necesita comprar su medicina. A pesar de que Carmen hace todo lo posible por obtener el medicamento, no siempre tiene el dinero. Hace cinco años, durante un episodio psicótico, Ada fue abusada sexualmente y quedó embarazada.
