Hola! My name is Roselvi (Rose) Castillo and I am excited to launch my 2023 project for kids in the Dominican Republic with Latinas & Lideres. We had so much success last year. We were able to give out 100 backpacks, 60 teacher kits, 100 hygiene kits, and toys and treats for all the kids. It was great to give back to the 2 communities I hold dear to me.
Having been born in Moca, Dominican Republic, and immigrating to the United States at the age of 5, I fully understand what my life would have been like had my parents not taken a leap of faith and come to New York. While I can't change the laws that hold kids, especially girls, back from prioritizing their education, with your help, I can impact the lives of children by doing what I can for these communities.
This year, I am fundraising to host 2 events.
Event # 1 (July 2023)
This event will be hosted in Ojo de Agua, Dominican Republic. The event will consist of:
- Transportation for 40 Latina & Lideres girls from Santo Domingo to Ojo de Agua and back. It will be their first trip to the Cibao!
- The 40 leaders will give back to 40 girls in Ojo de Agua by hosting a sports clinic. The sports clinic will consist of soccer, yoga, and other activities.
- Each of the 40 Ojo de Agua girls will receive a backpack full of high-quality supplies as well as sports equipment from the sports clinic.
- The 40 leaders will play a softball exhibition game while the 40 Ojo de Agua girls, along with community members, cheer them on.
- It will be a morning full of fun so I will be hosting the girls for lunch at my husband's grandparent's house.
- After lunch, the 40 leaders will visit the Casa Museo Hermanas Mirabal, where they will learn about Ojo de Agua's crucial role in the history of the Dominican Republic.
- The 40 leaders will then head back home to Santo Domingo.
Event # 2 (October 2023)
This event will be hosted in Moca, Dominican Republic. I visited this school last year and vowed to continue to help them in any way that I could. The school's annual budget of $2,000 didn't allow for the teachers to have what they needed or much support for their students. This year I want to focus on supplies for both and donating recess equipment. The event will consist of:
- School Supplies and backpacks for 50 Children
- Teacher Supplies for 10 Teachers
- Recess Materials such as sports balls, parachutes, jump ropes, skip ropes, scooters, hula hoops, and more.
