Katie's half-marathon for women in Afghanistan

To celebrate my 60th birthday, I'm running my first half-marathon on 30 March in Kew Gardens.

I'm raising money for the Linda Norgrove Foundation, which supports women and children in Afghanistan through programmes focused on education and incomes for women. There are more than 1.5 million widows in Afghanistan - one fifth of the adult female population.

Despite the brutality and repression of the current Taliban regime, the Linda Norgrove Foundation continues to successfully fund local initiatives that directly improve the lives of women and children in the country.

These include vocational training and a 6-month online web developer course for women who were studying computer science degrees when the Taliban closed universities for women, emergency winter food aid to c1,500 female-led families, and a baby clinic in Herat.

Last August, the Foundation also brought 19 female Afghan medical students, barred by the Taliban from university, to Scotland to continue their medical studies.

Linda Norgrove was an environmentalist devoted to ensuring that the people of Afghanistan would achieve prosperity and stability as their country was rebuilt. Following her kidnap by the Taliban and her death in 2010, Linda's parents set up the Linda Norgrove Foundation to continue her work.

You can find out more about Linda and the Linda Norgrove Foundation here.

At a time when women's rights globally are increasingly at risk, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless. The Linda Norgrove Foundation offers an opportunity to provide practical support and send a message of solidarity to our sisters in Afghanistan.

Thank you for your contribution - I am hugely grateful.
