When Black women are partnered with an advocate during birth, the impact can be incredibly positive, even life-saving.
While recent reports state that Black moms-to-be are now more at-risk than ever -- they’re more likely to experience limited support during labor, social isolation, increased economic anxiety, and even death -- the one-on-one support of a doula can really make a difference: moms are more likely to speak up to their medical provider if they feel like something is wrong, and 93% of mothers report a better overall birth experience.
THE DOULA: AMBER CHURN, THE BLACK BIRTH NERD
Amber is an experienced doula passionate about birth equity and Black maternal health. As CEO and founder of Black Birth Nerds, LLC, Amber is an expert at creating a safe and empowering environment during the birth experience. She brings joy, information, and comfort to each birth experience. She is trained as a birth and postpartum doula and is in the process of becoming certified with CAPPA.
THE FAMILIES: FOUR AMAZING BLACK MOMS-TO-BE
Amber has identified four amazing Black moms to receive her full doula support services. These four moms are single, work full-time, and are preparing to give birth without the support of a partner/family advocate. They are unable to pay for full doula services. It is Amber’s hope to offer them the best possible doula care during pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum so they can experience an abundance of safety and support.
THE BREAKDOWN: WHAT YOUR DOLLARS WILL SUPPORT
Your dollars will go toward providing scholarships for full doula services by Amber Churn for four Black moms-to-be.
Each mom will receive: The Mommy Childbirth Bundle ( valued at $2500 per mom)
PRENATAL CARE: Includes two prenatal visits, two childbirth education visits, and Amber being on call starting at 37 weeks to be present for the delivery.
LABOR & DELIVERY CARE: Continuous support, advocacy, and coaching at all stages of labor.
POSTPARTUM CARE ($1,000 value): Two weeks of postpartum care, including night doula support, newborn care class, breastfeeding help, house organization and meal prep, and emotional support and encouragement.
THE LEVELS:
$2,500 - Could fund full prenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum care for one amazing Black mom
$750 - Cover (4) prenatal sessions, (2) childbirth education lessons, full support during labor.
$250 - Covers (2) childbirth education lessons, (2) prenatal sessions.
$100 - Covers two childbirth education lessons.
$50 - Covers one childbirth education lesson.
