After our success with the 10x15m community garden in Nuquí, Protectores de la Tierra has expanded into a large-scale farming project.
We are ending food insecurity through food sovereignty in Nuquí, Chocó by cultivating hundreds of hectares of Black-owned land under Colombian Law 70.
We use ancestral practices and modern tools to ensure abundant harvests and reduce dependency on external food imports for the community.
By educating local youth, we reverse outmigration trends and build long term impact.
Our vision is to see thriving, self-sufficient communities with abundant access to nutritious food preserving cultural heritage and fostering economic growth for generations to come with sustainable agricultural livelihoods.
A generation ago, most food products were grown and even exported from Nuquí, including rice, beans, cane, coconut, pineapple, yuca, banana, tarot, medicinal plants, and more. With no highways to get to Nuquí by car, what goes in and out comes by boat or by plane.
Food sovereignty, or a community's own control of its food resource, is crucial in this region. The pandemic and the 2021 Colombian national strike are just examples of we face as Black and Indigenous communities.
We are getting active and welcoming others who have the knowledge, are learning, and who want to participate in our vision of a community once again with access to locally grown, plant-based meals.
Our current wrork for the project includes the construction of a 40 acre farm land with worker and volunteer housing, kitchen, bathrooms, garden and greenhouses, as well as marketplace stands in the municipality of Nuquí to distribute our harvests.
