The Blackfoot River is a living, irreplaceable part of our community. Essential to ecology, culture, and shared sense of place, this world famous river is a part of Montana’s sacred natural landscape we all hold dear.
The Blackfoot River Community is a volunteer-led group of local residents who came together in response to Riverside Contracting’s proposed 64-acre gravel pit and hot asphalt plant on the Blackfoot River, 4 miles upstream of Bonner, Montana. Many of us live nearby, recreate here, find peace and solitude along its shoreline, and depend on the health of this river and its surrounding lands.
We support responsible development, but this special waterway demands the highest level of protection; there is plenty of gravel elsewhere. As Robert Redford once said, "It’s not about opposing mining everywhere, just not here." The risks to our river and community are too great.
The Blackfoot River Community exists to ensure that decisions affecting this special place are made with transparency, sound science, and meaningful public involvement. This sacred river corridor is not an appropriate place for industrial operations.
Why we’re fundraising - Until now, this effort has been entirely grassroots and self-funded. As community engagement has grown, so have the practical costs of doing this work responsibly and effectively.
Funds raised will help support -
- Community outreach and education (flyers, lawn signs, mailers)
- Public information sharing and community meetings
- Expert consultation related to land use, water, and environmental impacts
- Information gathering and records requests
- Website, communications, and organizing tools
Why this matters - The Blackfoot River corridor supports
- Critical wildlife habitat and migration routes
- Groundwater and surface water systems
- Recreation, local businesses, and quality of life
- A sense of place that defines western Montana
Once industrial development alters a river corridor, it cannot be undone. This is a moment where accountability, intention, restraint, and collective voice matter.
