Community Notice: Urgent Response to the “Safe Streets” Initiative in Dallas
We need to speak plainly about what is happening in our city.
Under the Dallas Police Department’s “Safe Streets” initiative, there is an active and escalating effort targeting sex positive spaces across Dallas. On April 17, a raid was conducted at Spayse Studios. According to the arrest affidavit, the space was labeled an unlicensed sexually oriented business, with claims that patrons paid a $35 cover fee to enter and engage in consensual sexual activity, allegedly violating city ordinance.
Marc Tuton and Isreal Luna are being brought into national attention, with narratives focusing on these spaces using highly charged language like “sex offender,” despite there being a documented paper trail indicating that proper steps were taken to operate within legal frameworks.
This is not happening in isolation. There is a growing and urgent concern that Dallas law enforcement is actively working to shut down safe sex spaces across the city, creating an environment of fear, surveillance, and instability for LGBTQ+ individuals, especially for Black and Brown members of our community.
These spaces have always been more than physical locations. They are environments where we reclaim autonomy, safety, and expression in a world that has historically denied us those rights.
We also cannot ignore the broader context. During these raids, reports indicate that nearby churches were blasting religious music as arrests were carried out. The symbolism is clear. Religious freedom is being exercised in ways that directly impede on our own rights to bodily autonomy, sovereignty, and self expression.
We must call this what it is, a direct and coordinated attack on our community.
There is credible concern that more raids are being planned targeting safe spaces throughout Dallas. Because of this, we must return to the strategies that have historically protected us.
Effective immediately, we are calling for the reestablishment of lookout systems and whistleblower networks within our spaces. We need rapid communication channels to alert community members of raids or police activity. We must build safety initiatives centered on the protection of People of Color and strengthen internal accountability and preparedness across all venues.
In addition, we must take care of our own. Community care is not optional in moments like this, it is survival.
We are asking for support in the form of donations, goods, and resources to help build infrastructure that can sustain and protect our people. These contributions will go toward supporting individuals directly impacted by raids and arrests, strengthening safety systems within our spaces, and ensuring that our community remains informed, prepared, and protected.
Regardless of personal opinions or differences, we must understand the reality, when they come for one of us, it sets the stage to come for all of us.
This is about more than one space. This is about our collective autonomy, our right to gather, our right to exist, and our right to define safety on our own terms.
