Protecting My Son: A Mother's Legal Battle

My name is Shenequa Wagner, but most people know me as "Nequa." I’m a devoted mother in Las Vegas, Nevada, doing everything I can to protect my son from being taken away by someone who once walked away from both of us.

At 8 months pregnant, I was left behind—abandoned by the person I loved and trusted. He made it painfully clear that he didn’t want another child, or me. And abortion was out of the question for me. I was facing a high-risk pregnancy, eviction, and just three paychecks before I’d have no income. I put my belongings in storage and moved in with my mother and Godparents to survive unpaid maternity leave.

That was the lowest, most traumatizing point of my life—but I gave everything I had to be the best mom I could. I never filed for child support. I never chased him down. I just focused on giving my son a life full of love, stability, and opportunity.

Even though it meant a pay cut, I returned to work to continue my Flight Attendant duties still serving my passengers with excellence. I only took flights that would bring me home each night—because I wanted to be present for my baby. Over the years, I’ve worked hard to rebuild. My son is thriving—he’s learning music, swimming, training in Jiu Jitsu, and growing into a kind, happy soul.

Then one day, in a grocery store, everything changed.

After years of silence, his father reappeared—first asking to meet his son. I let him meet and see him. Then suddenly without conversation or notice he filed a custody lawsuit. A man who once denied and abandoned us is now demanding control—armed with legal counsel and what feels like an agenda.

This legal fight has drained me and my savings. The attorney fees, court filings, time away from work, and emotional toll have left me struggling just to keep up. But I won’t stop fighting for my child—not now, not ever.
