Protecting Karissa from Prison

We are reaching out to you as trusted and valued comrades in Karissa Lewis’ family and community. Our sister, leader, comrade, and friend Karissa Lewis need your support immediately.
In October of 2018, because of a series of family emergencies, Karissa made the brave decision to move across the country to recalibrate, restabilize and restore the health and happiness of her family. In this process, Karissa was tasked with moving her dogs, her belongings and the agricultural staples of her farm in Oakland to Atlanta in hopes of planting new roots and growth in her new home. In the process of moving her belongings across the country, Karissa was pulled over, arrested, and charged with “cannabis possession with intent to deliver”. She has been fighting these charges but what has been clear is that the best option to keep Karissa out of jail is to take a plea deal.
This plea deal will drop Karissa’s felony charges down to a misdemeanor and she will not have to serve any additional jail time. The plea deal means that Karissa has to pay a $7,000 fine in the next two weeks in addition to paying back the bail money.
That’s why we are asking for financial support with the exorbitant legal fees Karissa will have to pay in order to remain with her family and community.
We understand all too often what it looks like for some communities to be burdened and targeted by the criminal justice system while others are greatly profiting off a very lucrative billion dollar cannabis industry. Our comrade Karissa’s livelihood and immediate freedom depends on raising the funds necessary in the next 2 weeks.
As you most likely know, the uncertainty of Karissa’s freedom compounded with the recent transition of her father has created a severely stressful, emotionally draining life period in the past few months. So many of you have supported Karissa over this intense year, and it’s time to show up for her again, and she has shown up of every one of us time and time again. If Karissa is not able to raise 15,000 in two weeks to pay the fine and bail, Karissa will have to serve a mandatory minimum sentence of potentially 3-10 years in prison.
We can’t do this without you. Please chip-in what you can in order to not only alleviate the unbearable stress of this legal process, but to secure the very real freedom and future for our sister.
