Protecting and Restoring the Sacred Water Spring of Tateikei — A Community Appeal

In the high desert and mountain landscape of Wixárika (Huichol) territory in Mexico, water is one of the scarcest and most precious resources a community can have.
In this arid environment, natural water springs are not simply convenient — they are lifelines.

Marakame Francisco López Carrillo, a traditional spiritual and political leader and community elder, is calling for support to restore and properly establish the ojo de agua (natural water spring) at Tateikei, a sacred ceremonial centre at the heart of Wixárika community life.

The spring currently needs significant work to make it safe, functional, and sustainable for the whole community.

This means properly organizing the site so that there are clearly designated areas for human water use and separate areas for livestock, ensuring the two never mix.

It also means getting the water itself flowing and circulating properly, so that it is clean, accessible, and can serve the community reliably.

What the funds will be used for:

- Chain-link fencing and concrete or iron posts to enclose and properly divide the site

- Infrastructure to get the water flowing and circulating effectively

- Designated, separated areas for human use and livestock use

- Planting of shade trees to preserve and sustain the water source long-term

The community has pledged to provide all of the labour themselves — they are asking only for the cost of materials.

In a region where rainfall is scarce and water sources are few, this spring is irreplaceable. For the Wixárika people, water holds deep spiritual and cultural significance caring for it is both a practical necessity and a sacred responsibility.

Restoring this spring means protecting the health of families and children, supporting the livestock that communities depend on, and preserving the integrity of a ceremonial site that has sustained Wixárika life for generations.

No amount is too small. Thank you for your support

Every contribution goes directly to restoring and protecting this vital source of life.
