Protect Johnson Lane: No Gravel Pit

Donation protected
My name is A.J. Ursic, Jr.  I live in the  Johnson Lane community.  As a fellow resident, I'm very concerned about this proposed project.

The rural lifestyle within and about the Johnson Lane community in Minden, NV, is being threatened.  This community has been defined as:  "Due to our specific location, the variety of families and natural environment, our area has developed into a distinctive community exhibiting the rural characteristics of inclusivity and country values resulting in a unique composite from new young families with children to grandparents and retirement folks."

A gravel mining operation is being planned to be located about a mile (less than 6,000 feet), from our community.  The duration of the gravel pit operation is being planned for at least 40 YEARS.    Moreover, the plan specifies Johnson Lane roadway as the primary route of mining traffic to HWY 395.  This would result in the addition of some 170, heavy double-trailer rock trucks on Johnson Lane, PER DAY.  This may be a low estimate.  Funds from the contractor for road repairs for the majority of Johnson Lane are not included.  Sunrise Pass and Fremont are named as well.  As these streets become incombered, it is feared that Stephanie Way would be the alternate of choice.

Additionally, the operation calls for the extraction of some 24,000 gallons of water, PER DAY from our ground water.  This may be a low estimate.  Daily dust suppression water trucks will add about 24 additional trucks to the number of heavy product trucks, PER DAY.

Other additional gravel mining traffic includes: domestic and hazardous waste disposal, fuel, oil, and employees.

Presently, every day is a peaceful, quiet and restful experience in our country community.  The operation of this mining quarry will reduce those days to just four (4), PER MONTH

Notwithstanding, the unseen impact is in declining property values.  The more severe being those residents whose front porch is located just a matter of feet from the roads incorporating heavy mining truck traffic.

One of our desirous characteristics is the lack of curbs and sidewalks.  However, this favorable feature would then present a significant safety issue for our children waiting for, and, loading and unloading school buses; horse and bicycle riders; and, the general walking public.

Of course, all roadway activities (school buses, autos, bicycles, equestrian, and pedestrian), would be significantly more dangerous during winter freezing conditions.

There are thousands of people living in our community.  A great number of them have enjoyed the peaceful, contentment of rural living, either for one year, or for decades.  And now, that wonderful environmental existence will be shattered... for the rest of their lives.  Moreover, there is a great number of our community who will experience this shattered living condition for the first half of their lives... some 40 years.  They will know no other condition regarding quality of life here.

The funds from this effort will be utilized for getting the word out:  maintaining this fund and web page, large and small signs, flyers, formal letters to the County Manager and Commissioners, and announcements in the Record Courier.  This issue may be resolved within the next 60-90 days.

Currently, there are some residents actively receiving updates and participating in our efforts.  We need significantly more.  Any additional assistance to help in making the citizens aware of this issue will be greatly appreciated.  If you wish to be on our mailing list, for various "attachments," please send a note to me indicating such.  Find my email address on our web page.  It can't be shown here.

WE WILL NEED A MASSIVE LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN, SOON.
