Penfield Reef Neighbors for Responsible Development is a group of Fairfield residents dedicated to keeping our beach area livable, balanced, and safe. Our mission is to ensure that any new development respects the limits of our coastal neighborhood. Right now, we are facing a serious challenge: an approved 45-unit apartment complex at 812 and 820 Reef Road. This oversized development threatens to overwhelm our already congested streets, strain emergency access and sewer systems, increase flooding risks, and permanently alter the character of our community. The existing infrastructure and zoning simply cannot support this level of density and change.
But most importantly, Reef Road is the primary evacuation route for residents of Reef, Forest, and Fairfield Beach Roads. Many adjacent streets are dead ends, making Reef Road a vital lifeline during emergencies. Hurricane Sandy was a stark reminder of the danger when that route is overwhelmed.
Fairfield Beach Road residents rely solely on Reef Road as their escape route during devastating storms. Allowing this project to move forward as proposed would put the safety and well-being of our neighbors at risk.
We believe this project must be revised to protect the health and safety of our neighborhood and the broader Fairfield community. Funds raised will help cover legal fees and support our appeal of the TPZ decision. We invite you to join our effort by donating, sharing your voice, and staying updated through our Facebook group, Penfield Reef Neighbors for Responsible Development. Dina Cummings and Sue Camarda are leading this effort, but many others in our community are working hard to prevent overdevelopment and preserve the quality of life in Fairfield Beach. Your support is crucial to help us protect our community for generations to come.
