My name is Israel Teran.“Protección de la Nutria Marina en Arequipa - Perú” because I cannot stand by while the marine otter, the chungungo, slips toward extinction along our southern coast. These gentle animals are being hunted and killed by some artisanal fishers who see them as competitors. I have seen reports of attacks across cliffs and fishing zones, and the degradation of their habitat from pollution and harmful fishing practices. It breaks my heart to know we could lose them if we do not act now.

I am fundraising with Defenders of Wildlife because they have decades of experience protecting imperiled species and habitats. Together we can stop targeted killings, push for the creation of an intangible protected zone, and build safe shelters where otters can recover and thrive. Protecting the chungungo also means restoring cleaner, healthier coastal ecosystems for local communities and future generations.

This work will involve community outreach to change perceptions, practical measures to reduce harmful fishing practices, and on-the-ground efforts to establish safe refuges for otters.
