The Pinckney Tunnel links two historic Lawrence, Kansas, neighborhoods beneath Sixth Street with access at Mississippi and Illinois streets on the south side and the Pinckney School grounds on the north. In 2013, a mural commissioned by the Pinckney Elementary PTO and created by Van Go, Inc., transformed the tunnel from a dark, dreary space to a hidden gem of whimsical, magical, public art.
The Pinckney Tunnel Volunteer Collective was established to coordinate volunteer efforts for the care and maintenance of the tunnel and our community's mural beyond general tunnel maintenance provided by the public works staff of the city. Ongoing care and maintenance expenses could include supplies for graffiti abatement and cleaning and care of the mural, possible touch-ups by artists as necessary, and paint for tunnel walls, ceilings, and ramp approaches.
Public art is for everyone. It's worth creating and it's worth protecting, even in unexpected places like the Pinckney Tunnel. The mural, "Tunnel Vision," brings joy to everyone who uses the tunnel as a safe passageway across a busy street. We appreciate any support to protect and maintain this space and our community's mural!
