Protect a Washington, DC-area Family from Trump Sadism

Dear Family, Friends, and Comrades,

Here's a small but strong thing you can do to resist Trump in the immediate aftermath of the election, particularly his horrific plans for immigrants.

Cruz is a Honduran woman who was fleeing gender violence in her country in 2018. She was ripped from her young daughter then at the southern US border, during Trump’s “family separation” outrage.

I met Cruz and got to know her while I was reporting in South Texas and saw her in shackles at a mass trial in federal court. I did an essay about her and other victims of family separation for The Intercept. You can get to know Cruz here: https://theintercept.com/2018/07/28/family-reunification-separated-children-immigrant-mothers/

We’ve been friends ever since. Cruz and family now live in the suburbs of Washington, DC. Her daughter, 10 at the time of separation, celebrated her quinceañera last year and will graduate high school next year. She’s an honor student, but post November 5, she tells me she can’t concentrate on her schoolwork and is worried about that.

The family, like all such families, is under deportation threat for what’s expected to start happening after January 20. Post election, their lawyer has started efforts to insulate them by doing a new round of paperwork to make it much harder for a Trump administration to touch them.

The government applications and (discounted) immigration attorney fee come to $2010. The money needs to be collected and turned in, with the paperwork, by at the latest just before Christmas.

Some of us who know and love this family have already pitched in, but we need our friends and family to “completar la cooperación,” as mutual aid fundraising is described in Spanish.

Thank you in advance for your love, support and resistance. We’ll keep you updated.
