Project New Moon Empowering Women Through Tattoos

Every year, between 3,900 and 4,400 Canadians take their own lives¹. While males are more likely to die from a suicide attempt, females are 3 times more likely to attempt to end their lives. In addition, women are hospitalized 1.5 times more often than males for suicide related behaviors². Recent numbers from Statistics Canada report that intentional self-harm related hospitalization in girls alone have increased by more than 110%. Moreover, for every suicide death, there are 20 attempts. Females are more likely to harm themselves through cutting, while males are more likely to burn or hit themselves. Not everyone who self-harms is suicidal but it does become an addiction, a cry for help. Overwhelmingly, people who survive and live with their trauma are left with physical scars that can leave them vulnerable and insecure. Project New Moon was created to support people in their healing process, providing them with new beginnings through the art of tattooing. It is a non-profit tattoo studio that offers subsidized cover up services for folks who have physical scars left from self-harm. It also offers subsidized rates for breast cancer survivors who are seeking creative alternatives in their recovery. Since we launched in May 2018, our tattoo artist, Nickola of Koukla Ink, has donated her time to help over a dozen survivors. We now have a waiting list of over 30 people that extends well into 2020. It costs approximately $1,000 and takes about 6 hours to do a cover-up tattoo for one person. This cost includes a consult, tattoo design, studio time, equipment and supplies. We’ve launched a fundraising campaign to help the work we’re doing. We want to raise $10,000 to give new beginnings to 10 survivors. Your donation will help someone heal, overcome their trauma, and most importantly, build self-esteem and empowerment through beautiful artwork. Help give someone a fresh start with the gift of fresh ink.
