The more you give, the more you receive. It is a lesson that you learn over and over again in life. I did not realize the true meaning of this until a few years ago.
Hello, my name is Tom Murickan and I am a Junior at Diamond Bar High School. I started Project Help Them Forward, with the help of my parents to give back to people that need a helping hand.
In my last trip to India, our family visited a place called Chavara Special School in Koonammavu, Kerala, India that helped special needs children to young adults with learning social and vocational skills in order to help them to better assimilate into society and the general population. The school is run by nuns that gauges the level of special needs and teaches them the many basic social skills and vocational skills like making handicrafts and sewing, and even basic computer skills, in order for them to be able to work and help support their family. It was amazing to see how they were able to impact so many special people that otherwise would be shunned by society. When I returned from India after that trip, I realized that I could do more and should, to help the Chavara Special School.

Last year, the Southern most state of India, Kerala was hit with the worst rains and flooding in its recorded history (see link below) and caused severe damage to homes and loss of life across the State. While most of Kerala has recovered, establishments like Chavara Special School are still trying to get back on their feet.
The State of Kerala in India devastated by the worst flood of the century
The Chavara Special School and many of the patrons of the school and their families were deeply affected. Sr. Jitha, who is in charge of the facility, reached out to my family requesting help in order for them to get back on their feet and back to normal operations from the damage that the floods had caused to their classrooms and facility. The floods had also caused extensive damages to the homes of many of their special needs families and some of their homes completely. As I read her letter requesting assistance, I realized that it was the cause and call I was waiting for. If I could use my time and efforts to help them get back to some level of normalcy, then I would be able to see those smiling faces again and bring meaningful and positive impact to their lives. Thus, I started Project Help Them Forward.
Project Help Them Forward was inspired by Pay It Forward movements that I had heard of and read about, but I wanted to not just raise money for the cause, but work with them at the Chavara Special School to help them forward in life.
I am looking to raise $10,000 in 2019 for the many needs that Chavara Special School has. I would welcome your help, in any amount possible, to help me with this cause. Separately, I also launched my own tutoring service and I am donating all the funds I earn from it towards reaching this goal. I am also planning several fundraising events throughout the year to help the cause.
Finally, during my Christmas and Summer School breaks, over the next few years and through College, I plan to visit India and work at the Chavara Special School and donate my time and efforts to help them in whatever way I can.
I hope you can find it in your heart to support my cause and know that you helped put a smile on the face of a special young person.
We are currently pending 501(c)(3) status, so please know that your donations will be tax exempt.
When we reach the goal of $10,000, the funds will be wired from my parent's account to the bank account of Chavara Special School in Kerala, India for them to start the three most critical projects they have identified.
