Help Honor a Legacy: The Buffalo Sculpture & Plaque Project in Fort Pierre, SD
We’re raising funds to complete a powerful tribute in Fort Pierre, South Dakota—a newly created Buffalo Sculpture and a historical Plaque that will stand proudly beside it. This project honors a sacred legacy: the incredible story of Frederick Dupris and Good Elk Woman, whose actions helped save the American buffalo from extinction.
At a time when the majestic buffalo were nearly wiped from the Great Plains, Fred and Good Elk Woman stood up. They recognized that the buffalo were more than animals—they were life-sustaining beings tied to the spirit, survival, and sovereignty of Native nations. Their determination and care helped preserve a remnant herd, becoming part of a movement that brought these sacred animals back from the brink.
The sculpture symbolizes strength, resilience, and the sacred bond between people and the buffalo. The plaque will educate visitors on the critical role Frederick Dupris and Good Elk Woman played in saving a species and preserving a cultural legacy.
Your support brings this story to life. It ensures future generations learn what it means to protect, to remember, and to rise with the Buffalo.
