Preserve Granby: Stop the Gravel Pit

Donation protected
Granby and the Gravel Pit

In rural Granby, a troubling proposal looms—a plan to build an industrial gravel pit in a residential neighborhood. It threatens our peace, health, and the environment bordering Batchelor Brook and the wetlands. In the face of this threat, we find ourselves galvanized to preserve our neighborhood against industrial encroachment. Residents of Batchelor Street, between North and School Streets, along with others, are joining together to make clear the dangers, bylaws violations, and legal implications to the
Selectboard.

However, it remains unclear if citizen and committee concerns are being taken seriously. We fear the hazards and implications of heavy machinery in the pit, trucks reverberating down the street, growling up the hill, barreling down it, and spewing pollution, dust, and debris, will drown out the serenity of our homes and degrade our property values. From our perspective, it appears concerns are not being taken seriously by the Selectboard.

Runoff from the Gravel Pit threatens to degrade the environment. Fine particulate matter released by the gravel pit threatens to infiltrate our homes, contaminate our water, and risk our health. Respiratory ailments and other health complications become a very real possibility for those in the areas surrounding the pit and alongside the roads the trucks will travel.

Dozens of residents have spoken in opposition at three meetings already, reminding the Selectboard this issue was decided by a judge in 2010. And yet, despite the applicant presenting this project as similar in size to that which was previously ruled upon, the Selectboard continues to entertain the request for Special Permit.

United in our opposition, we remain committed to voicing our concerns, raising legal and bylaw violations, and demanding accountability from those who would prioritize personal profit over environmental degradation, our well-being, and the law.

Please consider contributing to the mounting legal and related expenses as we defend and safeguard our beloved neighborhood from the encroaching grasp of the proposed gravel pit. Any amount helps. If you are unable to help monetarily, please consider attending the next meeting on Monday, June 3rd at 6pm @ the Granby Senior Center, and adding your voice to those concerned about this issue.
