Hello Clyde Community and Friends,

My name is Jodie Baker, and I am a native of Clyde, North Carolina. I come from the Jackson family, who have lovingly cared for Pleasant Hill Cemetery for five generations. This cemetery is more than a resting place—it’s a cornerstone of our nation's history.

Pleasant Hill is the final resting place of nearly 1,400 individuals, including veterans from multiple wars, Confederate and Revolutionary soldiers, and those from historically marginalized groups, such as the enslaved. Some burials date all the way back to 1803 and others are not even readable anymore. It is sacred ground, woven into the very fabric of our nation's story.

For decades, my grandfather, Edwin Jackson, maintained the cemetery without compensation—just with a riding mower, a weed eater, and a generous heart. After he passed, my Uncle Carl Jackson and Cousin Terry Jackson carried on his legacy. Tragically, Cousin Terry died from complications related to COVID-19, and now Sam Jackson, Terry’s son, has taken up the responsibility.

Sam puts in countless hours of labor and earns just 30% of what professional cemetery maintenance crews typically charge, which would be at least $1,500 per week for a property of this size. Despite his dedication, the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Fund is running dangerously low, and we are at risk of not being able to continue the upkeep of this sacred space.

We're reaching out to those who have loved ones buried here, to those who believe in preserving history, and to anyone who wants to honor the memory of those who came before us.

Every dollar helps. Your donation will go directly to the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Fund, managed by my aunt Mary Ann Morgan, who oversees disbursements as the treasurer to ensure all funds are used strictly for the cemetery’s care and preservation. It is a non-profit organization for any who donate.

Help us continue to honor those who rest here with dignity, respect, and a well-kept place of peace and remembrance.

Please consider donating—and help us preserve Pleasant Hill Cemetery for generations to come.

Thank you and God bless.
