Praying for baby Mills Cook

Hey guys I’m Brittany, Sarah’s sister! We are trying to raise a little money to help Sarah and Rylan out with their expenses during their stay in Houston so they are able to stay close to Mills,  and to assist in the growing medical bills!

Here is the back story on what’s going on with Mills for anyone new to his story!

At 30 weeks gestation, Mills was diagnosed with fetal SVT- a condition where an extra impulse was causing his heart to beat way too fast. I was admitted to Woman’s Hospital of Texas in Houston for 5 nights and began an antiarrhythmic to convert his heart back to normal sinus rhythm. I continued the medication until delivery at 37 weeks. We knew at this point he had a high chance to convert back once he was delivered and was no longer getting the medication through the placenta so it was planned that he would stay in the NICU for 4 days for observation.

At delivery Mills was working hard to breathe. At that point, he went to a higher level of NICU to be treated. He was on CPAP for a day or so. On his second and third day of life he began converting back to SVT. He did not respond to the treatment in the NICU at Woman’s so he was transferred to Memorial Hermann and is now in the PICU on the CV wing.

While experimenting with cardiac drugs to find the right cocktail to convert his little heart, they decided to intubate him should something happen. He was converted during this and extubated 24-48 hours later. A day or two later he began having trouble breathing. After many tests and procedures, they found two cysts on his trachea and pressure areas from intubation. This is seen with prolonged intubation so it shows how sensitive his little body is. They removed the cysts and continued treatment for swelling. Two nights ago the his breathing got worse and they were forced to reintubate him. Along with this, they found that the right upper lobe of his lung was collapsed.

From a cardiac stand point, he is good and ready to go! Now we just wait for the respiratory issues to resolve. Once he is extubated and breathing easily in his own we will begin working with speech on feeds since he has only fed once by mouth.

The current plan is extubation on Friday and another bronchoscopy (usage of a camera to visualize past the vocal cords) either while they extubate or next week and then if all is well, we will prepare for discharge.

Thank you to everyone who is or had donated! Our family truly appreciates all the love and support being shown to Sarah, Rylan, and Mills.
