Portland Museum thatched roof repair appeal

Donation protected
There are two wonderful thatched buildings that make up part of the Portland Museum. One dates to the 1680's and the 'younger' one, to about 1730. Thatched roofs are always in need of maintenance and care and just at the moment we need to undertake an urgent repair to one roof in particular and the estimate for this work is approaching £6,000. Most of the income that the museum generates through admissions is spent on maintaining the valuable collection of artefacts and paying utility bills so there is little left for repairs to the roof etc. Any donations you make will be ring-fenced specifically and exclusively towards the thatch repair.

Portland Museum is a gem, tucked away in a beautiful corner of the island in two seventeenth century cottages, a stone’s throw from Rufus Castle and the stunning Church Ope Cove.

Staffed by volunteers from the local community, Portland Museum’s mission is to promote the history and heritage of the Isle of Portland by making accessible the collection of objects, archives and images that tell the story of the island from its earliest times to the present day. We aim to educate, inspire and encourage interest in the Isle of Portland through collecting, conserving and displaying objects relating to Portland’s social, industrial, maritime, geological and archaeological heritage. We are committed to working with our community to extend the range and diversity of the collection and its storytelling through innovative and creative means.

Any donations towards the repair of our thatched roof will be gratefully appreciated.
