In San Francisco, a phone costs less than rent; however, those who are unhoused often find it difficult to find charging ports for their phones despite there are free wifi services in the city.
Why does the unhoused community need portable power banks?
A phone allows the unhoused to apply for jobs and welfare programs providing a way for them to be lifted off the streets. A phone will also allow them to pull up the addresses of the nearby homeless shelters. Given that the unhoused often suffer from health problems, a phone can facilitate much needed connections to medical services and emergency contacts.
My name is Flora Wang and I’m a senior at Los Altos High School. I am inspired and amazed by how much impact a typical power bank that many of us have can do to the unhoused. I will be fundraising to buy power banks in support of The Gubbio Project, who will be providing the power bank exchange program for the unhoused community. The power bank exchange program provides exchange services for a charged power bank when a depleted one is turned in. All proceeds will go directly towards this effort.
