Aloha from PONO Soup kitchen here on Maui, Hawaii.
Our story begins with our founder, Daniel Lipson, who at a young age learned the importance of giving back to those less fortunate. One evening, when Daniel was 10 years old, he and his mother passed a homeless gentlemen while entering a grocery store. With little that they had at the time, his mother sent him to give food to a gentlemen in need. The man was overjoyed just from this simple kindness and grateful for having a meal after days of struggle and starvation. A few years later, Daniel was in dangerous situation where a group of men tried to rob him. Out of nowhere, a man appeared to defend him. Daniel in such awe of this heroism, he thanked the hero and asked, "why did you help me?" The man responded with tears in his eyes," Years ago I was starving on the street. You and your mother gave me food and it saved my life." At the age of 20, Daniel returned home from college to visit his family. While visiting, he came across a familiar face. It was the man he now remembers as the hero of his past. Daniel asked, "How is life?" the man replied, "Life is going great. I have an apartment, a job, and in a relationship." The man then took a cell phone out of his pocket and asked if they could exchanged numbers. Daniel was glad to do so. They continue to stay in contact till this day.
This true story, has provided the inspiration behind starting this cause and in helping others that are less fortunate. We believe that one act of kindness can change the world.
The PONO Mission Statement:
Our primary mission is to provide sustenance for the less fortunate people of Maui (homeless, elderly, and disabled population). By providing a primary soup kitchen, we will be able to support the large demand of the community for hot meals. Thus, reducing the pressure of the secondary providers on island (such as churches who have other primary goals). Secondly, we intend to employee members of society who wish to reintegrate by providing various employment opportunities. This will greatly benefit the entire population of Maui by creating more jobs and skill trainings.
The PONO Vision:
Our view of the future is optimistic as well as realistic. PSC would like to provide services specifically to the central area of Maui through our soup kitchen facility. Another main aspect of our business plan is to provide delivered meals to the north east region of the island, which lacks any available delivery programs to many in need.
All donations will be solely used for the purpose of initial startup fees. These fees include, but are not limited to, 501(c)(3), state articles of incorporation, charitable organization fees, legal fees, etc. We are willing and able to provide receipt proof of proper fund allocation to donors upon request. NOTE : DONATIONS ARE NOT SUBJECT TO TAX WRITE OFF. WE ARE USING THE DONATIONS TO OBTAIN OUR NON-PROFIT STATUS.
